one is for envy and one just for spite
the cuts in my heart, they show me new lies

The Great Welcome Feast that Hogwarts hosted annually had ended, much to Lily Potter Jr.'s pleasure. It was always a tedious event, waiting for the little firsties to get sorted and watching all their gleeful little faces. It reminded Lily of the day she got sorted- to everyone's glee except her own- into Gryffindor. Her entire family, as far as her father had told her, were Gryffindors, but she never really felt like she belonged there. She wasn't going to get up and fight You-Know-Who for morals, but perhaps for family and dear friends. Secretly she was a Slytherin, but she knew the lines separating the two rivalling houses were very, very thin indeed, and she'd only gained access to the lion house because she wanted to please her parents- who were both sitting behind her eagerly.
Nonetheless, as she sneaked out of the castle, head flicking round every few seconds, searching for teachers, ghosts or parents, she appreciated the nights air. It was around midnight, though she couldn't be sure, and she'd felt the need to get away from the suffocating common room full of goody-two shoes' and arrogant prats like her brothers. Quickly she made her way to the Black Lake, peeling off her clothes (starting with her shoes) and leaving them in a neatly sprawling pile next to the edge. Even in her bikini she wasn't very cold in the early autumn air, but she knew that as soon as she plunged into the shimmering pool of water she would begin to slowly freeze to death- not quite literally- thankfully.
A toe tested the water and recoiled almost as soon as it hit the surface, a small curse escaping her lips before they straightened to a grimace. She jumped- arms lifting above her as her body angled to slice into the water, leaving a circle of ripples which slowly penetrated deeper into the lake. The water calmed eventually, as she swam underwater, opening her eyes and getting used to the searing pain that ate away at her body because of the fierce cold. Eventually she rose, her auburn hair more brown now and her skin paled. She breathed in, hard, little under three minutes had passed, and kicked her legs to keep her head suspended above the water.
A moonlight figure strode from the castle towards the lake, and they were almost at the surface. A feeling of fear gripped Lily's heart- she couldn't get in trouble from teachers this early, could she? Nevertheless, she struggled to make herself look calm, and managed, a small smile twisting the edges of her lips as the figure found the small pile of her clothes at the edge. "Hey," she said softly, the sound carrying over the water to the ears of the person, who looked up to see her, as they hadn't seemed to notice her before.
